Cedar Chief

If you went out to Shoal Creek living history museum in June or July, you might have seen me carving on this piece of cedar. Just finished it up at home. I applied a hand rubbed satin poly finish and a coat of Howard Feed N Wax.

Shoal Creek July 1876

July 6th 1876 in the town of Shoal Creek. It was a hot and humid day but that didn't keep the crowds away. The women folk were trying to get the vote, deputies locked 'em up. But, let 'em out in time to cook supper. We elected a new sheriff, but he sold his seat to the corrupt Marshall Roe. Gunfight ensued and Sheriff Roe was shot down in the streets moments after he took office. After the gun smoke cleared, I made it back to the shop and got some work done on a cedar log. Love the smell of cedar and it sure finishes nice! I managed to get a few photos of the day's work. It seems I have a new roommate in the cabin, he left his old skin, but at least I didn't see any mice. If you didn't make it out this month you have a couple more chances this summer.

Shoal Creek First Saturday August 2018

Another good time at Saturdays event. The year was 1872 the weather was hot, but at least there was a breeze. The re-enactors are great and the skits are a always a 'blast' to watch. I took a few photos in the morning on the walk to the cabin. I get so wrapped up in my carving and talking with visitors that I don't get a chance to take a lot of photos. I'll try to get some good ones next month. September is the last 'free' event this year. I worked on a half log of cedar, cleaning off the sap wood and looking for the spirit inside. Shoal Creek September 2017

Well, another year of First Saturday Events has come to an end. This was my second year volunteering at Shoal Creek Living History Museum and hopefully I'll be back next year. There are still events upcoming for this year, next up is the Harvest Festival. It is October 14th, and I'll be there carving on a a new project. Not sure what it will be yet. In the mean time, here are a few pics from this month's event.

Shoal Creek August 2017

Rain and cool temps kept most of the visitors away. But the 100 diehards who did come out were treated to great enthusiasm from the re-enactors and volunteers in the town. It's a great bunch of people that make the town come to life, and I enjoy every event I attend. Hopefully September will bring better weather. Another great day at Shoal Creek Living History Museum. It was hot, humid and not much of a breeze on Saturday, but still had a good time talking with the visitors. I started a new carving from a piece of hackberry.

Shoal Creek May 2017

Another season at Shoal Creek Living History Museum has begun. These events are always a lot of fun. The volunteers and re-enactors make this a great event. I get a chance to meet and talk to an enormous amount of people. I started a 'new project' at the event, not sure where it was going. But, an unscientific poll among the kids attending, concluded it is a Santa Claus carving. Time will tell. Here are a few photos, hope you enjoy.
