Spotted Elk In Color

Here's Spotted Elk sporting his new bison robe. I had a lot of fun carving this one. I even enjoyed painting him, something I usually dread. You can add a lot of detail to a carving like this Native American. Hope you like him, and as always comments are welcome.

Spotted Elk

Finally got back to carving. This one has been sitting on my bench for awhile. It is my rendition of a Lynn Doughty carving, Charlie Red Horse. The braids were a real challenge, and I ended up carving two heads. Still have some adornments to carve and more detail to add, but almost ready for paint.

Spring Break

Well, I haven't posted any thing for awhile, I've been busy trying to get the lawn back in shape after last year's drought. Also got most of the garden planted onions, radishes, tomatoes, peppers, beans, corn and cucumbers. I did take some time to find a few morel mushrooms, good eatin'. I have a couple carving projects that have been on hold, time to get back to them. I'll post pics of them soon.

Carved this one for my great nephew. He is four years old and loves baseball. He is starting on a team this year, the Kansas City Cowboys.

2013 Kansas City Show

Well another show has come and gone. It was great to see old friends and make some new. Forecast of snow kept some people away. But those who ventured out had a good time. I received two second place ribbons, and sold two carvings. But the best part of the show was watching my wife win her first ribbon. She has been woodburning for awhile but never entered anything into the competition. As always the competition was strong. This is a top notch show and if you are in the area I encourage you to attend next year.

                                                This year's table.
Hickok took second place and was selected as a purchase award by Woodcraft in Lenexa KS. It will be on display in the store. I now have two carvings on display at Woodcraft. What an honor!
This was my second winner, my detail knife with the Santa handle.
And my wife's woodburning of Father Christmas.
They'll let anybody into this show. See ya next year.

She's A Lady

Just finished the "Lady" in time for the Kansas City Woodcarvers Show this Friday and Saturday. She was carved from basswood and is mounted on a cherry base. and measures 7 1/2" tall. As I mentioned in a previous post, this is a pattern from Ian Norbury. I'm pretty happy with how she turned out. Female faces are more difficult to carve, at least for me.

Progress on the Lady

Progress? Wife says she looks like an old school marm. At this point I have to agree she looks pretty homely.

Lady

Started a new carving yesterday, it is a pattern from Ian Norbury. Started with a 5" x 6" basswood block.  Here are the results of day one.

Hickok

Here is my latest caricature carving. It's an original design of Wild Bill, carved from basswood and mounted on a cherry base. It measures  nine inches tall including the base.

Update - Hickok took second place at the 2013 Kansas City Show and was selected as a purchase award by Woodcraft in Lenexa KS. It will be on display in the store. I now have two carvings on display at Woodcraft. What an honor!

Lincoln Finished

Abe is completed and I'm pretty happy with the results. Carved from two inch basswood, the finish is a 50/50 mixture of boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits. I then applied three light coats of Deft Satin and a coat of Howard's Feed-N-Wax. Mounted on a cherry base, he measures 11 1/2" tall including the base. He's going to the Kansas City Show next month.
