Viking Final Update
The Viking is done, and is settling into his new home. I applied a satin polyurethane to seal without creating a lot of shine. I'm happy with how he turned out and so are the new owners. He sold while I was still carving him.

More Progress on the Viking
At this point, I have begun to shape the base. I think it is still too wide, so I'll take more off the sides. I have added some detail to the face, hair and beard.Still need to add a leather tie at the end of the braid. I've tapered the chest and shoulder and need to carve the leather breastplate. Stay tuned.

Access Art Event 2017
Had a great time promoting woodcarving during the Access Art Event yesterday at the Woodneath Library http://www.mymcpl.org/locations/woodneath-library-center. Met with a lot of people, and maybe recruited a couple new club members.

Kansas City Show 2017
I had a good time at the show, even though I was fighting a cold. I received two 'Best of Group' awards and a 'Second Best of Group' award. Also sold a carving. This is the first year our club had a table at the show. Here are a few photos.

Viking
I decided to try something different with this carving. I carve a lot of Native Americans, mountain men, wood spirits, gnomes and Santas, but I have never carved a viking. I started by doing a rough sketch and sizing it to the block of catalpa I have on hand. I apply the pattern on the wood with spray adhesive, and cut out with the band saw. Now it's time to start removing wood.
