A couple photos from last Saturday's event at Shoal Creek Living History Museum . Had great weather, sold some carvings and met a lot of people. Thanks to everyone who came out.

Step back in time this Saturday, always a good time! You'll find me carving in the carpenter's shop.

The Harvest Festival will be going on with Pony Rides, Puppet Shows, Wagon Rides, Kids Crafts, and Pumpkins. $5 per person (age 5 and under free)

Big Shoal Country Fair September 2016

Had a great time at Atkins-Johnson Farm and Museum festival. Huge crowds all day. I sold six carvings and got a second place ribbon. There was only one category for wood working. First place was a replica of the Big Shoal Baptist Church.

Saturday September 3rd is a FREE family event. The Shoal Creek re-enactors will bring the village to life with Gunfighters, Outlaws, Soldiers, and Mountain Men roaming the streets.
Enjoy family fun activities and historical demonstrations of life in Missouri during the 19th century. Rain or Shine. You'll find me carving in the carpenter's shop!

ELDER IN CEDAR

Here is the finished carving. I decided to add a base, made from 8/4 cherry. I like the color of the cherry with the cedar, and I think the base is plain enough that it does not distract from the carving.

Cedar Carving Update #3

I have finished carving the Native American. I added detail to the face, hair and carved the buffalo robe. I applied a coat of satin polyurethane and wiped off the excess with paper towels. Gotta love the way the color pops when you apply a finish on cedar. I am still thinking about adding a base.

Shoal Creek August

Had a great time Saturday at Shoal Creek Living History Museum. Weather was nice and I was busy all day. Sold a couple carvings and talked with more people than I could count. Did manage to take a few photos.

Cedar Carving Update #2

At this point I have removed some wood from the front of the log below the neck. I refined the chin and neck before adding detail. Most of the face has been detailed. I carved and burned the eyes like I have on past projects. Still have to carve the hair and decide how far I want to go with this carving. I want to leave some of the log in it's natural state. But, I'm thinking a buffalo robe will look nice on this elder.

Cedar Carving Update #1

Spent some time working on my new carving. Started out removing some wood under the chin and beginning to form the neck. Roughed in the mouth. Lay in the mouth with a small gouge, then followed with a v-tool. Rounded the lower lip and separated the lips with a knife. Next, on to the eyes. Began by drawing in the eyes making sure the are on a straight line. Using dividers to keep them the same width and height. Once again, I carve in with a small gouge. Satisfied they are even, I use a detail knife to carve a stop cut under the eyelids. Then rounding the eyeball and removing a small chip from each corner. At this point the face is roughed in and needs some refining before adding detail. But, I think you can see where this is going. Thanks for following.

New Cedar Carving

I've been asked by several people to show more progression steps during my carving. So, here we go. I have been carving a lot of cottonwood bark lately, time to try something different. I have had this cedar log laying around for a long time, let's see what I can find inside it. These photos show that sometimes a carving will start out as one thing and then turn to another. I originally was going to carve an old woodspirit. But now I see an old Native American. Still not sure where it will end up, so stay tuned.
